STEP 5: Choosing The species

At Steven's Stock we try to use only
the best hardwoods possible this gives the table a very distinctive
look, naturally. Just about any hardwood you can think of is available,
so if you don't see the type of wood you want then please note what
species you want so we can get it for you.
1. White Oak: very hard,
durable, and strong. Heartwood is grayish-brown with open pores that
are distinct and plugged with hairlike growth called tyloses.
2. Red Oak: very hard,
durable, and strong. Heartwood is reddish-brown in color. Unlike white
oak, red does not have tyloses in wood pores.
3. Birch: Heartwood
reddish-brown with white sapwood. Fine grain and texture.
4. Mahogany: Medium
density with open grain and coarse texture. Varies in color from dark
red to light tan.
5. Cherry: Fine texture
and tight grain pattern. Varies in color from white to light or dark
reds.
6. Maple: fine texture
and grain pattern. Light tan in color with occasional dark streaks.
7. Redwood: Heartwood
is reddish-brown. Excellent for a dual purpose table where it might
be used to eat on.
8. Walnut: A fine textured
open grain wood with beautiful grain patterns. Heartwood is chocolate
brown with sapwood near white.
**All finishes are assumed
to be a ten coat marine grade varnish system due to that the desired
color can usually be achieved through the species of wood. However,
if a different type of finish such as pickled or bleached is desired
please note on the order form.
